Chapter 12
Hunter
Heâd fallen asleep with a smile but had woken up grumpy.
âI told you that you should have moved to the bed last night.â Normally, I tried not to say that, but he deserved it.
Iâd let him sleep for an hour and then had woken him up to eat, but heâd been too tired to get off the couch. After half a plate of dinner, heâd slumped over and told me heâd move in a few minutes. No amount of cajoling had gotten him to move.
âYou fucked my brain right out of me. You should have made sure I went to bed.â He sighed as he slumped over his coffee, shifting slightly on the hard seat of the kitchen chair. âAll your fault.â
I was a little bit worried about how sore he was, but if he could bitch like that I knew he was fine. A truly uncomfortable Zac was quiet and moody, not dramatic and insane. âDrink your coffee. Iâll make you eggs if you stop whining.â
He quieted and peeked up at me through his lashes. âWith fried potatoesâ¦and bacon?â
âGreedy.â But I smiled. âMaybe.â
That had him relaxing back into his chair and grinning as he brought his coffee to his lips. âOkay, but crispy bacon, not the wiggly kind.â
Oh yes, someone was tired but well-loved and excited too.
âYouâre getting vegetables for lunch to make up for all that grease.â A lot of veggies.
His face scrunched up, but I could see the smile in his eyes. âWhat kind of vegetables?â
âAny kind I want.â Especially since I was cooking.
Cooking for little Zac.
He sighed dramatically. âOkay.â
Like he had any choice. âDrink your coffee.â
Zac took another sip and gave me a wink. âYes, sir.â
Cheeky bugger. Leaning over him, I gave him a kiss and smiled. âDid the book come out?â
Heâd chattered all this week about release schedules and teasing authors. Watching him perk up and glance at his phone, I knew the answer before he grinned. âYes! Iâve been waiting forever.â
He started going on about the series and how much he loved the characters as I began making breakfast. Iâd been up long before heâd rolled off the couch and had already had my coffee and paid some bills. By the time I was halfway through cooking, heâd worked himself into such an excited state that heâd pulled out his phone already.
Of course, heâd said it was just to read the first couple of pages, but neither of us believed that nonsense. I knew Iâd lost him to the fantasy universe as soon as heâd pulled up the reading app. Some weekends I got frustrated, not that I told him that, but as I watched him getting sucked into the imaginary world, it was different.
He would be mine to take care of the rest of the weekendâ¦and not just making sure he ate and moved once in a while.
âOkay, put that away for now.â He gave me a sly look as he set his phone on the chair beside him, but I shook my head and held out my hand.
